SCHOOL COMMITTEES

TERRACE END SCHOOL. Mr W. B, Cameron presided over the monthly meeting of the- Terrace End School Committee last evening. Also present were Messrs W. L. Macpherson, C. M. Luke, G. C. Peterson, J. Allan, H. Smith and Rev. J. H. Bredin (secretary). The headmaster, Mr A. W. Thompson was in attendance. The headmaster reported inter alia as follows: “Mr R. L. Bradley having received a permanent position at Kaitieki, he has been succeeded - by Miss I. M. Reeve. On March 15 Mr Schwarz was absent owing to the death of his uncle, the late Mr Whalley. During last month the life saving team ably coached by Mr Schwarz succeeded in winning the Cunninghame Shield. To-day Mr Collier, president of the Life Saving Society, examined 132 senior pupils in land drill., From March 18 to 20 the school was visited by Inspectors Law and Crosby. Mr E. H. Lange, agricultural instructor, Nurse Pearson, of Dr. Gunn’s staff, and Miss Baker, of the Dental Clinic, also visited the school. As this is the last meeting of the committee, may I, on behalf of the staff, exrpess our appreciation of the way your committee has carried out its duties during the last year. The splendid environment of the school will serve as a reminder of the interest taken hy the committee.” The secretary was instructed- to write to Misses Chapman and Hayman, Messrs Campbell and Morine congratulating them on the success the pupils had gained in tlie life saving examinations conducted yesterday and also Mr Schwarz on the winning by the school of the Cunninghame Shield. Mr Cameron on behalf of the committee extended thanks and appreciation to the staff of the school headed by Mr Thompson for the conscientious manner in which they had worked for the school. Accounts totalling £6 16s 6d were passed for payment. COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the College Street School Committee was held last evening, Mr S. \V. Oliver, presiding. There were also present: Messrs I. Tucker, H. A. Hamilton, L. M. Armstrong, W. R. Taylor, C. Pees and P. W. Barnard. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster, Mr W. A. Swinbourn, reported as follows: ‘ ‘The roll to-day is 531, the lowest for several years, and 35 less than at this time last year. The average attendance was 494 for last week, and we nave not in any week this year reached the reauired average to hold'our present staffing. The department inspectors inspected the school on their first visit last week. Mr Lange, agricultural supervisor, and Mr Roydhouse, physical instructor, paid their usual visits, and the medical officer, Dr. Gunn, will visit the school this week. The swimming season has now closed and we are indebted to the Borough Council for the free use of the Municipal baths four times weekly during the season. Many children have learned to swim, and many have increased their skill, but too many still are unable to swim. We lost tho Cunninghame Life Saving Shield to Terrace End, our team coming second after a very close competition. Many distance certificates have been qualified for, two boys doing over two miles. Ten pupils gained the Lite Saving Society’s proficiency certmeato, entitling them to a year’s free use of the baths, while four gained elementary certificates. Miss D. Niccol is relieving at the school. Intimation was 1 received from the Wanganui Education Board to the effect that the Minister of Education would visit Palmerston North siioruv, when arrangemnts would be made for him to visit the College Street School, in, company with the chairman and other members of the board. It was decided to write to the Borough Council expressing thanks for the use of the baths. The committee decided to recommend to the incoming committee the purchase of 35 jerseys for the boys.
