RANGIOTU NEWS

SOCIAL AND DANCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ■ RANGIOTU, April 9. The local hall was well filled last Friday evening when the Maoris of the Foxton, Motuiti and Rangiotu held a very successful function to raise funds towards a presentation to the newly elected Maori Bishop of Aotearoa., Mrs Kauri,' senr., the organiser, who was ably assisted by Mrs P. Mahauariki, Mrs Kimura,. Mrs Pahi and Mrs Patea Kauri, is to be heartily congratulated for the efforts made in providing a bright and sociable entertainment and in devoting the proceeds to a worthy cause. The step taken by the powers that bo to appoint a Maori bishop has been a move in the right direction, and the fruits of that appointment are now much in evidence, and there is accumulated encouraging assurance of Maori support throughout the whole of the Dominion. There now seem to be no grounds for the fear once entertained that tribal differences would create other differences, and many Natives indeed who had joined the various schisms' have come back to the Church since the founding of the bishopric. Bishop Bennett will be visiting the Fox-ton-Matakarapa Pa on April 22nd and the Natives of this diocese are making all preparations for the occasion, and they, in common with the other tribes who have made substantial contributions to the bishopric, are sparing no efforts to raise their share of offerings according to and in strict compliance with Native custom. Incidentally the function held here" 1 last Friday evening is an example of the interest taken by the Natives and that interest is obviously becoming widespread. Mr Haereroa Kia, who was in charge of the evening’s proceedings, carried out bis duties in a meet capable manner. He also worked strenuously during the evening to make the cake weight-guessing competition a success. The result of the contest proved a tie, Miss Raiigiheuea, Misa Hakaraia, J. Pahi and Tuhi Larkins guesefng the exact weight—slbs. 3ozs. As a result of the draw Miss Rangiheuea took possession ,of the coveted trophy. In the guessing competition for, 1 the number of peas in a bottle Misa J. Henry proved the winner and was the recipient of a handsome .prize. Vocal items, hula and quaint Native dances were the order of things during the dancing intervals, and the programme submitted was heartily enjoyed. Miss Hakaraia and Mr Hupe Hakaraia contributed a duet which was greatly appreciated. A solo was rendered by Mr Hape Hakaraia (encored), and a solo by Miss Hakaraia. Later both Miss Tatana and Mr R. Takarua delighted the assembled dancers by introducing spirited interpretations of the “hula” dance. After the supper adjournment dancing was kept lip till tho early hours of the morning. SCHOOL ATHLETES. During Easter week a strong team from tho local school journeyed to Bulmerston North and competed in the primary school events on the programme at the Caledonian sports. These young sprinters had competed with varying success at tho Bulls, Feiiding and Sanson sports meetings and werß in excellent form. So well did they acquit themselves that they secured among them the lion’.s share of. the prize money, besides gaining the two gold medals (boys’ and girls’) presented the runner securing the highest number of points. The recipients of the nledals were Laurie. Wilson (girls) and Harry ltedshaw. By their successful, efforts against keen competition' this year they have worthily upheld the prestige of their school. This is the third year in succession that a gold medal has been won by a girl from the local school. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. The members of the Miniature Rifle Club assembled in large force last evening to hold their usual weekly ahoqt. The shooting in general was only fair, whilst some of the individuals scores were somewhat poor. Mr G. Fitzgerald won the trophy for the highest . individual score, while the team consisting of Messrs Roa Larkins, F. Robin and M. Saywell holds the weekly cup. Football. —Huia (3) v. Foxton (0). A mixed team of the Huia junior and third grade teams journeyed to FoxtOn last Saturday to play a friendly game at the Hive tation of the Foxton Football Club. Both sides, naturally lacked form and combination. However, the game served to remind the players that the football season is dawning, and a lot of training and Solid work will be necessary before the competitive games commences. Next Saturday, 13th inst., the Foxton thirds > will play the return match with the Huins at Rangiotu.
