TRIBAL CLASH
ON INDIAN FRONTIER. WIDESPREAD FIGHTING LIKELY. BRITISH FORCES IN READINESS. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) Received April 2, 11.25 a.m. DELHI, April 1. Serious trouble is threatened 911 the north-west frontier in India owing to an outbreak of fighting between the tribes Os Sunnis and the Shiahs. The former are, orthodox Moslems, while the Shiahs * are regarded as heretics.
Acute feeling between these tribes culminated in war in 1927, when the Shiahs were heavily defeated and were driven into British territory. The Shiahs are now attempting to regain the captured country. If a move is made to. invade Sunni territory, widespread tribal fighting is certain. The great danger, however, is that the Sunnis may attack the Shiahs first. This would probably result in British territory being invaded. A big British column at Koliat is in readiness, and aeroplanes are engaged in close reconnaissance.
