“NOT UNTHINKABLE”

BRITAIN AND AMERICA AT WAR. RIVALRY FOR SEA SUPREMACY. STATEMENT BY. CLERGYMAN. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Australian Press Association. —-United Service.) LONDON, March 31. ‘.‘We are being consistently told on this side of the Atlantic that war between Britain and America is unthinkable. Don’t you believe it. It is not unthinkable,” stated Rev. It. J. Campbell at Brighton to-day. Mr Campbell 'has returned to England after an extensive tour of the United States.

“We used to say that war between Britain and America was unthinkable,” added.Mr Campbell. “Moreover, we have already fought America.twice, and another Anglo-Ame-rican war will_come if matters are alolwed to drift as at present. I am dismayed at many things I have heard and read concerning America’s intention and readiness to prpceed to extremities against Britain. “Although there are more idealists in America than in any other part of the world except Britain, there is an element which hates Britain and would welcome the thought of attack. Another element does not particularly want war, but it is fully determined that America shall replace Britain as mistress of the seas. They are strong enough to succeed, because they have money, while Britain has not.

“We must be determined, no matter under what circumstances, not to draw the sword against the Americans. Let them say and do. Let them build what they like. Let us go to arbitration a thousand times and lose rather than fight. Ultimately the spiritual forces will be uppermost.” Rev. R. J. Campbell, D.D., has been incumbent of Holy Trinity, Brighton, since 1924. He was born in London in 1867 and is the son and grandson of (Nonconformist ministers. He entered the Congregational ministry in 1895, but was ordained into the ministry of the Church of England in 1916. He has published a large number of well-known theological works.
