MOTOR CAR STOLEN.

LATER FOUND IN DITCH. MASTERTON, April 1. A daring theft was perpetrated at Tauherenikau races on Saturday, when a seven-seater ear belonging to Mr P. Fly, taxi proprietor, of Masteyton, was stolen from the course. Later it was discovered upside down in a creek on the' Kaliataura ltoad (near. Featherston), in a badly damaged condition. Mr Fly took a load of passengers down to the course on Saturday morning, arriving there about 11.10 a.m. On arrival he parked his car under the trees, and did not go near it till after the last race, when, on returning to the parking place, he discovered that the vehicle was missing. About eight o’clock that night the car was* found. On inquiries being made by the police it was discovered that the thief had visited a farmhouse near the scene of the smash and had borrowed a bicycle, stating that he would ride in to Martinborough and instruofc a garage to send out for the car. That was the last that had been seen of him, ho evidently having proceeded toward Featherston, where he made good his escape. He had suffered a slight cut under one of his eyes, but otherwise was none the worse for. the accident, which, seeing that the car must have been travelling at a high speed when it overturned, is rather remarkable. The car, which was practically new, was valued at £BSO, and was not insured. The damage is estimated at between £2OO and £3OO.
