DEVIATION WORK.
MEN STILL EMPLOYED. This morning about forty men formerly employed on the shift which ended at the railway deviation on Thursday last began work with the day shift. Those men who have been transferred will, a “Standard” reporter was informed this morning, be provided with work as long as it is available, and will be kept on as long as possible. Some will probably remain permanently, but others will have to leave within a month. The. position which has arisen is not an extraordinary one, stated the engineer (Mr W. Bell) this morning, as similar reorganisation took place last year at the end of the summer period. However, in that case, action was deferred until the end .of April, and, when the time came to consider the matter, there was plenty of work available for the men on drains and culverts. This year the conditions are different, and difficulty will be experienced in finding sufficient work to keep the men engaged. None has been dismissed yet, but the present position cannot go on indefinitely, stated Mr Bell.
