COUNTRY CLUBS’ MEETING. KIA TO A LOSES McVILLY SHIELD. Per Press Association. NAPIER, April 1. The Wellington country clubs' championship athletic meeting and McVilly Shield competition was held at McLean Park, Napier, to-day and proved most successful. Despite wintry conditions there was a good attendance of the public. Competitors were present from Gisborne, Waipawa, Dannovirke, Mangatainoka, Carterton and Palmerston North, besides local men from Hastings and Napier. Contests were keen, many thrilling races and splendid finishes being witnessed. The McVilly Challenge Shield was lost by the holders, Kia Toa Club, Palmerston North, to the Hastings Club, whose points totalled 57. Napier were runners-up with 44 and Dannevirke third one. behind. The previous holders were fourth with 38, then Carterton 21, Waipawa 10, Gisborne 9 and Mangatainoka 9. The cup presented by Mrs Annie Holden, of Makotuku, for the ladies’ relay championship of Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and centre, was won by Napier after a splendid race with Hastings. S. Lay attempted to lower the javelin throw record, but failed by three feet.
