MANAWATU CLUB’S TOURNEY.
FIRST ELIMINATING ROUNDS,
[ The first elimination rounds of the | championship, Hokowhitu handicap and ! consolation handicap were played on ? the Hokowihtu links this morning—the f second day of the Manawatu Golf | Club’s Easter tourney. [, Playing against F. C. Christensen, 1. IH. Horton, amateur New Zealand I champion, found a sturdy opponent in • ( the qpen championship, but won his i game two and one. Horton carded par fours at the first three holes, standing ! 3 up at the third. Four were required at the next hole, where Christensen took the hole in par 3. At the next ! : holej Horton, returned to par. golf and i notched a “birdie” at the sixth, standing 4 up. His opponent took the i seventh hole in par 5, the eighth being ; ft halved. Christensen took the ninth in ] K “birdie” 2, Horton standing 2 up. The i K former took the tenth hole in par fig--17 ures and reduced Horton’s advantage, jj The 11th was halved in par fours, , I Christensen taking the twelfth and tliirB teenth, to stand one up. Horton broke b par at the next hole and squared the match. Par figures at the loth hole ' gave Horton the lead, while the sixteenth was halved in par fours. HorL ton took the seventeenth hole in a par four and the match two and one, having taken 38 out and 36 for the. eight i homeward holes, his opponent requiring II 42 and 36. [ In the open championship in October j last, L. Seifert, junr., was beaten by 1 A. Seifert by 7 and sin the first round, [ but the position was reversed to-day, K the younger player being in good I form. He went out in 38, two over k fours, standing 3 up at the turn. Par E was broken at the 10th artd, by taking B the next three holes, the match was w won by 7 and 5. I J. P. Hornabrook, playing against J. I K. Bennett, missed a two foot putt on \ the 18th green for the hole and match f in the open chajnpionship, which went ’ on to the 19th liol ebefore the game was won. Also playing in the championship round, A. E. Ekstedt was too good for L. D. Drummond, who lost by 5 and 3. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. ■ The first round of the opening pionship resulted: H. Hutchison (Manawatu) beat 0. H. Williams (Manawatu) 5 and 4; E. G. Sim (Manawatu) beat M. C. Fenwick (Marton), one up at the . 19th; T. H. Horton (Wairarapa) beat F. C. Christensen (Marton) 2 and 1; S. W. Rapley (Manawatu) beat 0. H. Duce (Manawatu) 3 and 2; A. E. Ekstedt (Manawatu) beat L. D. Drummond (Dannevirke) 5 and 3; R. G. Moore (Manawatu) beat E. Clark (Levin) 1 up; L. Seifert, junr. (Manawatu) beat A. Seifert (Manawatu) 7 and 5; J. Hornabrook (Masterton) beat J. K. Bennett (Miramar) 1 up at the 19th. HOKOWHITU HANDICAP.'
