CASH ORDER SYSTEM

EVIDENCE FOR AND AGAINST. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 27. The Government inquiry into the cash order system of trading was concluded in Auckland' torday, and the members of the commission (Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Industries and Commerce, and Mr J. W. Collins, secretary of the department) having heard evidence in the four main centres will now prepare their report for submission to Cabinet. Representatives of the National Council of Women said that the council as a body was definitely opposed to the cash order system of trading, which was considered to be expensive to the borrower, to be breaking down the integrity of the people, to be opposed to thrift, and to be a factor in increasing the cost of living. The council felt definitely that the Government should legislate the cash order system out of existence. Social workers of the council were convinced that the system was most pernicious. Many cases of distress due to the system had come, under their notice. An agent spoke strongly in favour of the cash order svstem from personal observation and experience gained during visits to thousands of homes in Auckland. He found that the system had been reported to be one of real service to the housewife. The manager of a business dealing in pianos expressed the opinion that the cash order system was most beneficial and had served a useful purpose for the buying public. He recognised that tho system was another form of timepayment. Extra business had been introduced to traders. In general, the cash order business had become a kindred companion to the timepayment system, and in his opinion would take a national place in distribution. j
