HOKOWHITU LAGOONS.

SUGGESTED BEAUTIFICATION. A suggestion that the various lagoons in the Hokowhitu portion of the borough should be beautified by the council and made available as a pleasure resort was put forward at the meeting of the Hokowhitu Ratepayers’ Association last evening. Mr A. \V. Sutton stated that the lagoons in the district occupied a considerable area and in their present state were so much waste to the owners. He suggested that, if the owners gave the actual lagoons, the council could acquire a strip of land one chain wide around them and a scheme of beautification could be proceeded with. It should easily be possible to excavate the adjoining hollows and form one big lagoon. Such a lake would be an asset to the town and a source of perennial enjoyment The charm of Christchurch lay in the River Avon and in the speaker’s opinion the provision of a sheet of water such as he proposed would add immeasurably to the attractions .of Palmerston North. The 'proposed lake would be large enough for boating. Mr J. S. Winton pointed out that if anything were done in the matter it would be necessary to provide access by a proper street as the Ifigoons at present were surrounded by private property. Mr Sutton agreed that proper access would be necessary. The discussion then dropped and the meeting proceeded to other business.
