(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Feb. 28. Tho electric light bowling tournament held on Wednesday evening was a success , from all points of view. The evening was ideal for bowling and tho absence of dew mado play pleasant. Tho president, ,Mr A. H. Morgan, extended a hearty welcomo to tho visitors who included rinks from Terraco End, Foxton and Levin. Three games of three-quarters of an hour each wero played, at the close of which Grey, Brann, ‘Knowles and Morgan (skip) wero the winners, having won all games, j The result of the other gamc3 were: I Jones’ 2 wins, Whibley 1 win, Sparrow 1 i win, Wood 1 win, Monk nil, Bull 1£ wins, ' Gagliardi 2 wins, Quarric lj wins, Thompson 2 wins. 1 Mr G. Mitchell and Mr W. Forbes left on Thursday for a motor trip via Waikaremoana. The Athletic Club met on Wednesday evening when final arrangements were mado for the sports gathering to bo hold on March 9th. During the evening the opportunity was taken of bidding farewell to Mr White, who has been a staunch supporter and a valuablo member of the club. The president, Mr R. E. Downes, and Messrs Brann, Bovis and Curran eulogised tho good work of Mr White in the interest of tho club and wished him success in his new home. Mr W. Gunning has been appointed draughtsman to tho Nelson City Council and takes up his duties on Ist March. The teachers, scholars and committee of the local 6chool joined on Wednesday afternoon in bidding goodbye to Mr, Mrs and Miss White. Mr A. E. Hyde, chairman of the committee, in a eulogistic speech, wished the departing guests every success and happiness, and on behalf of tho teaching staff asked Mr and Mrs ■ White to accept a handsome travelling rug. Mr White was also the recipient of a leather bowler’s case suitably' inscribed from tho Shannon School scholars. Mr White feelingly rplied and hearty cheers for all wore given by the scholars. Mr and Mrs White and Miss White left later by car for Palmerston North cn route for Carterton. The local Plunket Society hold a most successful baby show and garden party at Mr A. Woods’s grounds on Wednesday. There was a large gathering of adults and babies. Excellent entries wero received in every class in the baby show and Mrs Hobson, Mayoress of Levin, had no easy task in placing the winners. The classes for decorated go-cart, doll’s pram, and tricycles wero well filled and. some very dainty and novel ideas were shown. Prodtico and cake stalls and afternoon tea stall all did excellent business, while golf and croquet competitions were much enjoyed. Tho grounds at “Otaura” are particularly suitablo for such an entertainment and not the least pleasure of the afternoon was gained by looking around tho bautiful gardens. The society was indeed fortunate in having tho use of tho grounds and in having fine weather. The following in the baby show were presented by Rev. Mr Farnell with handsome prizes:—Under 3 months: Doris McEwen, Graham Bryant; under 6 months, Helen Gardiner, James Jamieson; under 32 months, Edna Pric4, Trevor Mardon; under 18 months, Phyllis Shailer, Boy Conchie; under 2 years, Dawn Hook, Michael D’Ath; champion girl, Dulcic Healey; champion boy, Boy Robinson. The winners in the decorative sections were: Gio-cart, Mrs G. Coyle; doll’s pram, Joan Bovis; tricycle, Billy Easton. The financial result of the afternoon was most satisfactory and will go far towards repaying tho very energetic band of workers who did such good work. All responsible are to bo congratulattd on the very successful afternoon. Mr E. Airn, of the Whangarci High School, has received promotion to tho Hutt Valley High gcli/001.
