MEAT AND FRUIT
ENGLISH EXERIMENTS. (Australian Press Association). LONDON, Dec. 1. The report of tho Food investigation Board contained interesting descriptions of numerous experiments regarding the transport and carriage of rood. Reference is made to chilled beef experiments from Australia, which, the report states, leave little doubt that slightly frozen beef from Australia can be landed in Britain in good condition, but much experimental investigation is necessary before a opinion can be expressed as to the possibility of carrying ice-free chilled beef over such a long journey. Other experiments indicated that certain coarse joints of meat from inferior quality carcases, foi example, aged cow beef, can be greatly improved by hanging. Meat hung for 17 days in a temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit is still perfectly sweet. A number of experiments were carried out in regard to forecasting the life of the applo. A detailed study was made of 12(3 apples selected from representative orchards. It was found that trees with the largest fruit bear apples with the shortest life. It was also discovered that apples grown in heavy soil would keep twice as long at 34 degrees Fahrenheit as those off the lightest soil.
