MANGAONE BRIDGE

ACTION DEFERRED. # Action in connection with the erection of a new bridge over the Mangaono Stream (Boundary Road) has been deferred by the Borough Council, which last night decided to adopt the recommendation of the works and town planning committee as follows: Lnaz the engineer report on tiro construexion of the Mnngaone Bridge on Boundary Road, length 75 feet, width i» feet estimated cost £I9OO, be received and'Hie Kairanga County Council and the Drainage Board bo advised that the question of the erection of the new bridge will be again considered in the New Year, also, that the Railway Department be approached for a contribution towards the cost.” , A joint report was submitted on tne undertaking by Messrs J. Hughes (borough engineer) and J. E. Mcnzies (county engineer) as follows: We have made preliminary designs for tins bridge and now submit our estimate. We consider that nothing less than I» feet width of roadway should be provided as this will become an important thoroughfare when the railway works are completed. Tire length proposed is 75 ft. made up of three spans with a reinforced concrete superstructure cairied on concrete piles. To provide the waterway required by the Drainage Board it will be necessary to construct the deck level of the new bridge approximately 2ft 6m. above the level of the present bridge. The raising of the deck level will also involve the raising of Boundary Road ior three chains oil either 6ide of tire bridge, and filling for this is included in our estimate. We estimate that the work will cost £I9OO, on the assumption that the section of Boundary Road will be closed to all traffic during the progress of the work so that it will not be necessary to erect a temporary bridge.” , Cr. Eliott commented that the present bridge was very old and delapidated. The works and town-planning committee of the council advised that a communicaition was received from the Manawatu Drainage Board forwarding a copy of the minutes of a conference of local bodies held on November 19, when the following resolutions were agred to: —(a) That the cost of the proposed improvements to the outlet bo allocated as follows: —Drainage Board 40 per cent, County Council 15 per cent, Borough Council 25 per cent. Racing Club 20 per cent. (b) That the Drainage Board contribute 75 per cent and the Borough Council 25 per cent of the nett cost of the maintenance of the stream. It was decided by the committee that the action of Crs. Fitzherbert and Mansford in agreeing to the mentioned allocations be confirmed.”
