COCK FIGHTING IN SOUTH. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 29. The question whether or not cockfighting is cruel was discussed at some length by members of the general committee of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ito-nigbrt. A letter was received from Mrs Stewart, of Nelson, forwarding a newspaper clipping, telling of cockfighting, but not exactly where. It also stated that cock-fighting was popular on the West Coast, where fights were held frequently. The first member to say a word in defence of cock-fighting was a woman, who had been invited to attend fights in National Week, but did not go. She said: '‘There ia no cruelty. A bird that was brought to Christchurch from the West Coast killed about 20 in as many minutes.” Mrs Dalton said that it would have a steel spur on. Mrs Biltcliff said that this made the killing all the quicker. The chairman (Mr G. Biltcliff) said that steel spurs were really a humane implement.
