THE UNEMPLOYED.

DEPUTATION TO PRIME MINISTER. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 29. Couching their request in the- most respectful and courteous terms, a deputation of six, representing the unemployed of Auckland, waited on the Prime Minister this morning, asking that married men on relief works be paid 14s per day between now and Christmas. Although unable to accede to the request, the Prime Minister promised that he would issue instructions immediately that all men on relief works “bo given a fair go” so that they might have a chance to earn more than 9s (single) and 12s (married) per day. He also agreed that men who went into the country to take on contract work should bo paid 9s and 12s per day for a fortnight or three weeks as it was impossible for them to make that money on contracts before they “got their muscle.” He regretted that men should have to go to relief works at all, and it was Ins desire to make things as hopeful as possible for them by allowing the opportunity to make more than the minimum rates.
