who whs for many, years a member of the New Zealand Police Force, occurred at his residence in Auckland. Mr Bowman, who was 75 years of age, Was born© in County Cork, Ireland, and came to the Dominion 50 years igo. ' Shortly after his arrival he joined tire police force, and he -was in charge of many sub-districts in the South Island, including the goldfields jn Central Otago. After being at Timfcru for seven years he was transferred to Mount Eden, where he was sergeant in charge. for seven years until his retirement in 1918.

Tourists who have visited the head of take Wakaiipu will regret to learn of the death of Mr David Aitken, of

(Paradise. House, which occurred recently*' at the advanced age of 88. Forty-two years ago Mr Aitken took his wife and young family to the-Head of the *Lhke,' where he continued his :vocation, packing goods and materials to the Rees Valley mines. Two years latar ho went to Paradise House, which at first lie held on lease from the-late Mr \V. Mason, but subsequently he purchased it. Ever 6ince the Aitken family have remained in possession of this charming old home, set amid the most picturesque bush, lake and mountain scenery.

On Saturday, October-. 27th, there passed "away at his residence, Morris Street, Palmerston North, a very old colonist in the person of Mr Thomas Ross. Born in Ross-Shire, Scotland, in 1840. he had attained his 88th year. With his parents and their family the late Mr Ross came to Australia 75 years ago, and while still in his teens spent seven years in Victoria, having many and varied experiences on goldfields and sheep stations. Coming to New Zealand in 1862 lie took up land in Otago, and later in Manawatu, where he had resided for the past thirty years. He took an active interest in St. Andrew’s and St. David’s Presbyterian Churches, having been an elder of both. A man of very exceptional capabilities, he lent a helping hand to many. Two of his sons were killed in the Great War at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. He is survived by his widow, his son, Mr L. Ross, Wanganui, and daughters, Mrs E. Pullyn, Taumarunui, and Misses E.. and 0. Ross, Palmerston North.
