Messrs 0. Sporlo and B. Hobday wero feferees. BOXING CLUB FORMED. Judging from the attendanco and enthusiasm which attended tho initial efforts of local boxing fans to form a club in Fending last night, tho affairs of that body will prosper, about thirty followers of the sport being presont. Apologies for absence wero received from many others who sent assurances of thoir support. . The mooting was convened by Mr \V. Rayworth on whoso motion Mr H. B. Burrell was elected to tho chair. . In opening the proceedings, tho chairman Introduced Mr G. Watchorn, of tho jVlanawatu Boxing Association, and Mr J. LouisBon, also of Palmerston North,. and representing the New Zealand Boxing Association, who had como to Feilding to give their assistance and advice in tho formation of tho club. It had long been felt, the chairman continued, that there was room for a boxing club in Feilding. Thero was considerable talent in tho town and several boxers had already made very creditable Bhowings at other centres. The first essential would be tho providing of a gymnasium and tho procuring of an instructor, but in this respect tho chairman was pleased to announce that Messrs Firth and Hepburn had promised to act. Mr Louisson thought that thero was not tho slightest need for hesitation in forming a club in Feilding. He would suggest the formation of a club first and later it could be merged into an association. Tho local promoters need havo no diffidence in going ahead with their proposals for thero was excellent goodfellowship , among tho boxing clubs and associations in Now Zealand, and assistance would always bo forthcoming. Ho was pleased to seo that the matter had been put forward by men of tho right stamp for eo long as men of repute were at tho head of affairs tho battlo was half won.. Mr Watchorn assured tho meeting of the Support of the Manawatu Boxing Association in all matters for the advancement of the fistic art in Feilding. He was pleased to see that tho project had met with such good response and thought that thoro should be no difficulty in tho carrying out of tho proposal to form a club. At this stage Mr Rayworth handed to tho chairman a letter ho had received from tho E. R. Wimsett, president of the Manawatu Boxing Association in which the writer regretted his inability to attend the meeting, nut wished tho local movement every success and assured it of tho support and co-operation of tho Manawatu Association. Mr B. N. Sandilands suggested that the club be formed with a small executive to start with. Tho appointment of officers of tho club could be held over until such matters as tho providing of a gymnasium, instructor and. other essentials had boon finalised, and with this view Mr L. A. Elliott agreed, recalling that a previous effort to form a club in Feilding had failed through not proceeding on tho lines suggested by Mr Sandilands. Mr Louisson explained that there were no rules debarring Feilding from forming an association of its own, but ho would counsel them to form a club for the present. To Mr Sandilands, Mr Louisson replied that if a club was formed it would bo a filiated with the Manawatu Association, but it could frame and adopt rulc3 of its own. It would necessarily havo to bo bound by the rules of tho Manawatu Association in certain matters. . . , In reply to other questions, Mr V atenorn explained that tho Manawatu Association would exercise no actual control over the local club unless it was proposed that a tournament bo hold. , Mr Sandilands moved that a boxing cinb bo formed in Feilding and that an exocutivo of not more than seven bo appointed to go into the question of finances and rules to report at a mooting to be held' within a week. Sir Rayworth, in referring to tho finance of tho club, stated that he had made investigations and he was sure that about 60 or 70 members would bo forthcoming. Ho did not however, look at tho matter purely from a financial point of view, but nis interest mainly lay in providing sport in tho town and also a means of keeping tho young men off tho streets at night by opening a gymnasium. After a survey of tho members present, Mr Watchorn could soo no reason why the whole matter of tho formation of a club could not be gono into at once. He admitted that tho matter was not really his business, but ho felt bound to admit that the Manawatu Association, in tho resuscitation of the sport in Palmerston North, had not had such an offering of support a 3 was present at tho meeting. , . ] After discussing the matter briefly tho motion was put to tho meeting and carried unanimously. Tho executive, pro tern, was then elected as follows: Messrs 11. B. Burrell, B. N. Sandilands, W. Rayworth, H. Frecklington, L. A. Elliott, H. Parsonage, and E. McGruor. Mr D. C. Cullinano was appointed secretary. Referring to tho various articles of equipment needed, tho chairman said. that there was no immediate need for thoir purchase as he had received an assurance from the Manawatu Association that gear was at the disposal of tho newly formed club, also the ring and effects for tho holding of a tournamont. An offer of services gratis from Dr. Phillips, of Feilding, was received with acclamation. On the motion of tho chairman, Messrs Watchorn and Louisson were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their advice and proffers of assistance. Following tho conclusion of tho general meeting the oxecutivo met to discuss matters for furtherance of tho clubs’ formation. PLUNICET SOCIETY. .
