MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETINGS WEST END SCHOOL. Mr C. 11. Whitehead presided over tho monthly meeting of the West End School Committee last .evening. Messrs G. Tremaine, G. Newth, A. E. Blackbourn, H. Healey, A. Beattie, T. Downing and G. Lyno (secretary) were also present. The West End Sunday School authorities wrote thanking the eommitteo for tho uso of tho school for the annual party on August 22. A donation to the school funds wan enclosed.

The headmaster, Mr F. W. Moore, reported that prior to the holidays the attendance had been poor, averaging 363, for a period of four weeks, out, of a roll of 408, but since the holidays there had been an improvement, though a considerable amount of sickness still existed. The roll at the time of writing stood at 411. Misses Bnldwyn. Stephenson and Clnpham had boen absent owing to sickness, tho two last-named being still away. Mr N. S. H. Law. had conducted the annual examination on August 6, 7 and 8. Arbor Day had been held on August 8, a considerable improvement being effected to the schoolgrounds. In fhis connection thanks were due to Messrs Lyrio and Healey for their active assistance and to the senior girls who had provided afternoon tea. A gift of a replica of the pennant of the Japanese warship, Yakumo, from Bernard Tremaine was acknowledged. Repairs were required to Standard 6 door and to tho seats in the shelter-slied. Mr Tromaino reported that he and Mr Beattie had visited tho school and would recommend that tho exterior bo coated with rough-cast as tho, walls were showing seepage. The Education Board’s architect, Mr Hodge, had seemed favourable to the project. It was decided to meet Mr Hodge at the school and discuss tho matter. Accounts totalling £92 15s 5d were passed for payment. HOKOWHITU SCHOOL. Tho monthly meeting of tho Hokowhitu School Committee was held last evening, Mr J. T. J. Heatley presiding. Also present were Messrs W. S. Woodroofe, G. Lane, A. J. Shailer, G. D. Pattle,, W. Dudley. M. Voss and C. H. Amos (secretary). It was decided to hold Arbor Day on September 8, Mr Shailer offering to superintend the pruning of the roses. Tho chairman was instructed to procure a speaker for the occasion. The Huia Social Club .forwarded a donation of £3.—Received with \ vote of thanks was accorded the staff for tho excellent work they had done in, training the children for the carnival. . _ .
