PURGING COMMUNIST ELEMENT,

MAJORITY RESOLUTION

A feature of to-day’s proceedings of tlio annual conference of tho Trades Union Congress at Swansea was the adoption by an overwhelming majority of a resolution moved by the Railway Clerks’ Association instructing tho General Council to take steps to purge tho trade union movement of the Communist eloment.

PROBLEMS OF THE DAY

SEAMEN’S MEMBERSHIP

(Australian Press Association?—United Service.) LONDON, Sept. 3. In concluding his presidential address at the jubilee gathering of tho Trades Union Congress, Mr Ben Turner deplored tho amount of time and money spent in gambling and drink. This was at least £600,000,000 a year, and in addition there was the wastage of mind and manhood.

Miss Margaret Bondfield, supporting the proimsal for tho expulsion of the National Union of Seamen, pointed out that tho seamen admitted encouraging and assisting the formation and development of tho Miners’ Non-Political Union, which the Trades Union Congress regarded as a breakaway from the Union Jack. Mr Jones, attempting to oppose the resolution, was shouted down. Mr Turner stated that a troublous debate was unnecessary. Delegates had virtually decided that some action was necessary. Tho seamen had already withdrawn from membership. The congress carried tho proposal with one dissentient.

Mr J. R. Clynes declared that the Government was never more untrustworthy, untruthful and callous than regarding unemployment. Mr Baldwin’s pitiful appeal to employers, he added, was contemptible.

INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS

CO-OPERATION WITH EMPLOYERS,

(British Official "Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 3

At the sixtieth annual Trades Union Congress at Swansea, 620 delegates were present. The membership represented is just under 4,000,000, a decrease of 280,000 since last year.

According to the Daily Herald there is a general feeling that the General Council’s action in co-operating with the employers in the establishment of a scheme for maintaining industrial peace will be approved by a substantial majority and that tho “decision of Congress will mark a definite and historic turning-point in trade union development.”
