SLAVERY.
STILL OVER FOUR AIILLIONS.
The fact that slavery still persists in 19 comvfries of the world was stressed by John H. Harris. Parliamentary Secretary of tho Anti-Slavery Society, in a recent address at Alancliester (England). Quoting from a League of Nations’ report, Air Harris added that tho number of slaves was “at loast. 4,000,000.” These men, women •and children could be taken and sold for profit, lie said, “like any article of commferoe.” Tlie. conditions i,n which many of them lived were very bad, and in this connection he believed that evidence of a startling character would shortly bo forthcoming from China. There were still nearly 2,000,000 slaves in Abysinnia “out of a population of 10.000,000.” The only weapon in the fight against slavery, Air Harris said, was public opinion. Hitherto, however, it had not been found possible to enlist the active help of more than a very small number of people.
