DAVIS CUP

FINAL' STAGE. FRANCE v. UNITED STATES. HONOURS SO FAR EVEN. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association. —United Service.) Received July 28, 11.5 a.m. PARIS, July 27. In the final singles match tor the Davis Cup, France versus America, Tilden beat Lacoste I—6, 6—4, 6—4, 2—6, 6—3. Cochet. beat Hennessey 5 —7, 9 —7, 6—3. 6—o. Tilden in the first game was unsteady, not judging his net approaches, as well as being a victim of clover passings. But in the second and third games he better sized up Lacoste’s tactics, outvolleyed him brilliantly and severely dealt lobs. Tilden eased in the fourth game, but fought tigerishly in the final. The Cochet-Hennesscy match was a magnificent struggle, both hitting out in preference to playing for safety.Thereafter Cochet asserted his superiority. On Sunday Cochet meets Tilden, and Lacoste Hennessey. The pairs for the doubles have not yet been decided. It is revealed that the American Ambassador, Mr Herrick, played an important part in the review of Tilden’s suspension. He interviewed Mr Collum, and pointed out the unfortunate effect the decision of the American committee was having on French public opinion, especially as the decision was so long delayed after the Wimbledon tournament. The following players are representing the contestant countries:— France.—Lacoste, Cochet, Brugnon and Borotra. United States.—Tilden, Hennessey, Hunter and Lott.
