WHIPPET NOTES

(By Benbow.) The Manawatu Whippet Racing Club are to be congratulated on coming to amicable arrangements with the Hunt Club to stage -ciieir sweepstake meeting at Te Matai last Wednesday, 'the large crowd present were treated to an excellent auernoon’s entertaiutainment; both with the horses and with tho dogs. The dog track was quite satislactory, and altnough not as last as the Sportsground track, nevertheless somo excellent times were recorded. ’the outetanding performer of the day was Gold Dust, this young dog winning both the Juvenile and Open Handicaps in a convincing manner. A short description of how the dogs ran in the various events will be of interest. Juvenile Handicap.—The finalists were Gold Dust, lultic, Chips, Beau Geste, Hob Stuff and Chicken. The placed dogs, Gold Duyt, Hot Stuff and uhicken, are three brothers and are of the same litter. This result, no doubt, is unique. Mr A. V. Oliver’s Kiltie is a much improved dog and wiii win before long. Mr C. Brown’sChips is coming right and his win in the heat was very impressive. Mr Robinson’s Beau Geste has tho pace and as yet is a bit green at the racing game. However, if he can be kept right for weight he should win some races and be a good advertisement for his sire, Remind. Mr Thwaites’s Hot Stuff has the pace, but as 'yet lie refuses to do it right all the way. He is a most gentlemanly dog and doesn’t believe in getting too far away, from his nearest attendant, being inclined to look round and ease up. However, one day soon he will do it right and ma’-e the handicapper have a funny fecV.ng as he sure will win by a street. Mr Sheriff’s Chicken is fast improving and will shortly emulate the deeds of his brother, Gold Dust. Of tile unplaced division Mr Wimsett’s Trixie gave an indifferent display. After getting -away nicely, she collected her field after going six yards, but then cried enough. The Hurdles resulted in a good wm for Miss Sheriff’s Cayenne, after the bracket, Gold Dust and Tea Bell, had run off when in a good winning position. Had these two dogs gone on right a stirring finish would have resumed and no doubt cayenne would have clipped some time off the record of 12 3-ssec. The final event the Lancaster Handicap, of 150 yards, saw Kiltie scratched in the first heat, and Laughing Eyes in the second heat. The going did not suit Remind and lie put up an indifferent performance. Mrs L. Oliver’s Verawyne made her first appearance on a New Zealand race track and performed creditably. Previously, shojiad not won a race exceeding 120yds, but on "Wednesday she fought out the heat with Gold Dust all the way. Cayenne was going great guns, but the younger dogs made him carry his handicap all tho way and this proved his undoing. Full of Tricks did not impress in this company. The second heat saw Laugmng Prince win comfortably from Tea Bell. Laughing Prince was going well within himself all the way. Tea Bell failed over the last bit but the schooling she had hold over the hurdles is improving her stamina. Hot Stuff would not do it right at all in this race. Elopement is still green at racing, and has not yet worked herself into condition. . The final resolved itself into a tussle between two dogs owned by Mr and Mrs L. Oliver, and two owned by Mr R. L. C. Aitcbison. From an excellent start Gold Dust went- to the front and was never headed, Laughing Prince finishing second with Verawyne and Tea Bell close up. Tho final was run 2-ssec faster 1 than the heats.
