COOKS’ DISPUTE
SHIPOWNERS WAITING MEN’S REPLY TO ULTIMATUM.. FORMATION OF RIVAL UNION. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph. —Copyright.) MELBOURNE. May 8. A special meeting of the Commonwealth Shipowners’ Association consulered tho cooks’ dispute, and decided to withhold a decision as to what action would be taken by the owners until the men’s reply to the former’s ultimatum, is received.
Representatives of the Australasian Council of Trades Unions and the Trades Hall Disputes Committee, after a meeting of the two bodies, interviewed the owners and urged that no immediate action be taken, pending a meeting of the maritime unions tomorrow, at which they believed terms of settlement would be devised. The chairman of the Shipowners’ Association stated afterwards that ho had met the secretary of the Australasian Council of Trades Unions, but had not discussed the question of entering into negotiations tor a settlement, as the shipowners were awaiting a reply to their ultimatum before taking action. It is believed that an attempt is being made to form a rival Marine Cooks’ Union, the members of which would he given the same award as the de-registered cooks in the event of the strikers on the Huddart-Parker Company’s boats continuing the fight. FORMER UNION OFFICIAL. EMBEZZLEMENT ALLEGED. Received May 9, 10.45 a.m. SYDNEY, May 9. A former official of the Sydney Seamen’s Union has been arrested on a charge of embezzling £295, the property of the union. The name of the official has not been disclosed.
