RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Baring at Hawera on Thursday and Saturday'. Wanganui Club's races the following week. Raasay may bo raced at the Sydney spring meetings. Hvnanna may be taken across the Tasman next season. Nincompoop (Absurd —Chcloma) is to be schooled over the hurdles. Beau Cavalier won the Groat Northern Steeples last year with 9.7. This year he has 12.2.

Both the Auckland and Dunedin meetings escape the 9.0 minimum, which comes into operation on June 7. The Jocuiator gelding Carrigallen is a recruit to the hurdiing; branch at Trcntham. The gelding possesses a fair turn of speed, on the flat. Ic is reported that Peter Maxwell, the 1926 Grand National Steeplechase winner, will race at the Dunedin winter meeting in preference to Auckland.

Bennanee is back in work at Hastings. He should be ready for some of the late winter or early spring meetings with a possible Winter Cup.

Merry Damon, who was last season quartered at Awapuni, is now being trained by W. Griffiths at Hastings. Merry Damon is a useful sort under welter weights. The name Claymore has been approved for the Greyspcai —The Spike four-year-old in IT. Nurse’s stable at Riccarton. A horse by the same name, by Multiform from Marion, raced in the Dominion about 15 years ago.

Pouri is another northern candidate who may elect to go to Dunedin in preference to the Auckland fixture. E. Warner, who has been associated with both Peter Maxwell and Pouri on many occasions, will bo their pilot. The late Mr J. B. Harcourt had held the position of president to the Wellington Racing Club for the long period ot 28 years, while prior to his being appointed to that position iie had been vice-president. Lady Gay, who is an aged mare by Gay Lad—Coronata, proved capable of leading the field home in the Nelson Cup, the T’oxton trained Discourse being the favourite. It was Lady Gay’s first success for the season in 13 starts. Two much travelled racers in First Acre and Royal Game got on the winning list at Nelson, the former being successful in the open sprint on the first day and the latter in tile final event on Saturday. Discourse, following running second to Lady Gay on the opening day at Nelson, was again installed favourite on Saturday, but was unplaced. The daughter of Gasbag and Ladit'y has had a heavy season and her connections do not appear ready to give her an ease up. Freezeout, who won the Maiden event at the Marlborough fixture held at Trenthain when the local candidate Inflame tilled second berth, led Mark Mint home in the Tahuna Hack Handicap on Saturday. The latter again started in the Stoke Handicap to capture the honours.

Ramoses, the Sutala —Roden three-year-old gelding who was quartered in R. E. Haten’s stable for a brief period, proved capable of beating Kilperon at a difference of 231bs in the open sprint at Nelson on Saturday. A return to hack company two races later saw 8.7 halt Ramoses. A two-year-old filly by Cynic from Royal Moment, therefore a sister to Royal Time and a half-sister to Royal Dainon, has joined H. S. Greene’s team at Hastings. The owner of the filly, Mrs A. I{. Hutchinson, is reported to have refused a substantial offer for a gelding foal by Hunting Song from Royal Moment. Two of Mr Frank Ormond’s young thoroughbreds, a filly by Lackhum—Hymarty, and a gelding by Lord Quex— Birkelot, have been taken in hand by W. McKinnon in the ITawlco’s Bay. They are said to be well grown youngsters, the filly being particularly promising. A rising two-year-old by Lord Quqx from Salvette in M. J. Carroll’s team in the north lias been accorded the name of Gay Duke. Perle de Leon was to have been schooled over the fences at Hastings last week, but as, he had had a foot slightly injured while racing, the idea of jumping him in the meantime was abandoned. However, it is quite probable that ho will be found racing at Wanganui.

Tho easiest win at the Waikato fixture was stated to" have been tiiat of Schorr in tho Huntly Hack Handicap. _ After lying about the middle of the field till well into the straight, he wa*s brought forward to win in a canter, the official margin, however, being given at only three parts of a length. Awapuni stables furnish half a dozen of the field in the Puma Hack Handicap at. Wanganui, Ghelone, who is within 91bs of the topwoight, heading the local candidates. Fee Simple and Keddar are on terms with 8.9, Callaninore has 8.2, Desert Lad 7.9, and Hyinestrason 7.0. Brigadier Bill has been awarded topweight in the Hack Steeplechase with 11.10 and of the three Awapuni candidates Maidos comes in at 10.5, Royal Heather 10.-2, and Son o’ Afine 9.0. Elysianor figures in tho field, but report has it that he will not be persevered with in the meantime.

Of the 14 ’chasers entered for the Wanganui Steeplechase, Comical occupies pride of place wirh 11.0, the two Awapuni candidates, Pmvhero and Maidos, having 10.8 and 9.0 respectively. Frisco Jack,—who although locally 'owned, is now in A. Wright's hands at Foxton, has been awarded lOlbs above the minimum. No less than 27 have been entered in tho Kaitoko Hack Hurdles, while there are 17 in the May Hurdles—the open class event—yet Awapuni has furnished but one nomination in each. In the former Afister Gamp is nicely treated with 9.10, while in tho other Vexatious is allowed in at 9.7. Ngata and Red Fuchsia being both over 11.0.

Awapuni’s sole contribution to the Connolly Handicap, Blimp, has been awarded 7.5, Lady Desmond being at the head of the* table with 9.0, Glenross having 8.12 and Royal Damon and Ntikumai each 8.10. Awapuni’s contribution in the Borough Handicap is also somewhat limited Broad Acre, Lin Arlington and Wanderlust being the only ones figuring. The first named' is weighted at 8.3, Lin Arlington at 7.2, and Wanderlust at the minimum.

The three-vear-qld, Arikiwai, who resumed work 'at Riccarton recently, after spelling for six weeks, is getting through useful tasks. Probably F. D. Jones will get him as forward as possible before the time arrives to make up his team for his next trip to Sydney.

G. Murray Aynsley, who has three ■yearlings doing useful work at Riccarton, expects to make a start very soon to break in two more youngsters, these being the colt by Arrowsmith from Orange. Blossom, and the filly by Arrowsmith from Contempt. The Tractor three-year-old Coupling, is on tiie easy list at present, states the Christchurch Star. He was gelded some time ago and on resuming he showed slight symptoms of lameness. The trouble is not considered serious, however, and it is expected that he will be at work again before long, Arikiwai, who this season was seen in a favourable light, having won five times out of 16 attempts, in addition to securing several minor placings, has once, moie joined up with the working contingent under tho tuition of F. D. Jones, at Riccarton. He is a half-brother by Paladin to Piliiewinkie, and is being raced in the interests of Air E. G. .McCullough., of Canterbury.

The three-year-old Mart-ham, by Martian from Polymnia, is reported lo havo been thrown out of work. He had a long spell before being commissioned sometime ago, but it seems -doubtful if he will ever stand up to a preparation.

Tho- Wairarapa. trainer, R. S. Bagby, lias live horses in his stable, tho property of the South Australian sportsman Mr K. E. Jolly, some of them being Australianbred youngsters and others New Zealand purchases. Nothing definite has beon decided concerning .them, and it is pos-

sihle they will he raced in the Dominion, but if they go to Australia Uagby may remove there to continue in charge of Mr Jolly's team. ASIIB UUTON AC'CEPTA NCES. Per Press Association.
