THE COMPETITIONS

SESSIONS IN PROGRESS. LARGE AUDIENCES YESTERDAY. Similarly with last year, botli the day and evening sessions at tho Alanawatu Competitions Society's festival are attracting large audiences. The auditorium was practically full before the first class was held last evening, and, as showing the decided interest of the public, not many seats were vacant after midnight when the judge was hearing the last section programmed. Tlio outstanding items last night were a sailors’ hornpipe danced by two young lads—the judge, Aliss F. Emery, was very enthusiastic about them—tho Polk or traditional song (Irish), Air H. Phipps, of Wellington, displaying his delightful lyric tenor to great advantage in the Atoore melody. “Believe Ale if all those endearing young charms,” and the mezzo soprano solo.
