WALLACE CUP.

MOST BEAUTIFUL GARDEN

WON BY AIR COLLIER

There was again this year keen competition for the Wallace Cup, the trophy awarded to tile winner of the garden competition conducted by the Palmerston North Horticultural Society. The successful entrant for 192i'-23 was Afr W. C. Collier’.

The competition is one that has not only benefits for the individual but also for the community as not only does it give a delightful hobby to the competitor but also tends to beautify the borough. Under the system of awarding marks, encouragement is given to those gardens which are not concealed from the view of the public. '"Out of a maximum of 100 points, 35 are for improvements carried out during the year, and this naturally gives a distinct advantage to the owners of new properties. Originality and artistic design receive 15 points; colour grouping of flower beds 10 .points; symmetrical arrangement of shrubs, etc., 10; vegetables 10 (5 for those suitable for immediate use and 5 for future supply); orderliness and cultivation 10; general effect 10. The judge has the right to deduct 10 points i.f there is any restriction of the view from the road. The judge, Mr T. F. Conway, paid three visits during 'the year. The handsome cup presented by Mr James Wallace will be presented at the chrysanthemum show to-morrow.

Results were as follow: —Mr W. C. Collier, 202 Fitxherbert Avenue, 56.3 points, first. Mrs G. Leary, corner Wood Street and Argyle Avenue, 55.7 points; second. Next in order of merit were: —Mr A. M.
