CHAMPION WALKER.
ENTERTAINED AT DANNEVIRKE
Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, May 8. Under the auspices of the Dannevirke Amateur Athletic Club, a complimentary social was tendered to Walter J. Lankey, of Dannevirke, tli'e New Zealand one mile and three mile walking champion, tho Australian and New Zealand three mile walking champion, and also.the one and three mile champion of tho country clubs and tho Wellington provincial, champion. He was complimented upon his achievements by the Mayor, Mr A. J. C. Runciman, and presented with an inscribed gold watch by members of the club and local supporters. Lankey since be has been walking has started in 51 events, has won 29, been second in 12, third in three and seven times unplaced. In the course of his reply he regretted that some of the critics in the press in the large centres had not been too kindly disposed towards him, probably because came from the country.
