COTTON WORKS.
INVESTIGATION IN AUSTRALIA
(Australian Press Association.) Received May 8, 11.30 a m. LONDON, May 7. Mr R. P. Lawson, of Manchester, has returned from Australia, where he investigated the possibility of starting a large cotton spinning and dyeing works, entailing an expenditure ot £500,000 British capital and the employment of 1000 workers. In an interview Air Lawson stated that he could not at present advise his co-directors to embark on the undertaking, as there was no prospect of a reasonable return owing to three big obstacles, namely, tho tariff, varying conditions and the small demand. He estimated that the present local demand at approximately between two and three millions sterling, whereas it would not pay to start operations with less than six millions.
