NOTES FROM FITZHERBERT.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FITZHERBERT, May 8. As is usual for school concerts, tho Fitzherbert Hall was well filled last Friday evening when tho local school children gave their annual entertainment in aid of the funds. The stage was prettily decorated by members of the School Committee and the dainty dresses worn by tho performers made tho whole effect very pleasing to tho eye. It was generally remarked that the mothers must have gone to great pains to assist the teachers by providing the fancy dresses, etc., necessary for the many different parts taken by the children. Following is the programme:—Song, “A Light Song, _a Bright Song,” senior pupils; .recitation, “Little Orphan Anne,” Chrissie Field; duet, “The Valley of the Ferns,” Miss Anderson (piano) and Mr Lawrence (cornet); chorus, “Ten Little Pigeons,” junior pupils; recitation, ‘Somebody’s Mother,” Tom Hopcroft; club swinging, Mrs Brereton; play, ‘A Slight Mistake,” Lucy Gough, Grace Lawrence, Dulcio Oxnam and Tom Hopcroft. pianoforte duct, “Valse do Fleurs,” Misses T. and N. Field; recitation, “Mushrooms,” Dulcie Oxnam action song, “Nursery Rhymes,” junior pupils; recitation, “The Greedy Elf,” Marjorie Vo well; play, “Sam’s Tooth,” Jack Woods, Dick Blenkiron, Maurice Gahan, Annie Gough, Etty Anderson; recitation, “Sleepy Things,” Nita Brill; cantata, “Dame Durden’3 School,” senior pupils; chorus, “Over the Meadows,” junior pupils; recitation, Margaret Cook; pianoforte duet, “Jolly .Darkies,” Nancy Field and Annie Gough; song, “Tiptoe,” senior pupils; song, “The Indian Loyo Cull,” Mrs Richardson, “God Save tho King.” The programme was greatly enjoyed by the audience and. it would be difficult to discriminate between the different items. In the cantata, “Dame Durden’s School,” Thelma Lankshear as “Queen of the Fairies” acted her part well .and Queen Elley as “Damo Durden” left nothing to be desired. One of tho most amusing items was the little play, “A Slight Mistake,” in which tho principal parts were taken by two little girls, Lucy Gough and Grace Lawrence, who, dressed as lold . ladies, brought down the house by criticising in verse the doings of their “husbands.” A clever piece of acting was also evident in the dialogue, “Sam’s Tooth," when Jack Woods as “Sambo” had an aching tooth extracted by Dick Blenkiron, “tho dentist.” At the conclusion of the concert programme Mr Lankshear, chairman of the School Committee, thanked the audience for their attendance and also tho mothers. who had giyen valuable assistance by providing the necessary wearing apparel for the children. He said that tho teachers, Mesdames Brereton and Sinclair, were to bo congratulated on the manner in which they had trained tho children and the committee expressed their thanks to the teachers, the parents and Miss Field who had been tho accompanist for the practices and also for that evening. The hall was then cleared for dancing and .after supper had been dispensed a jolly time ’’was spent by old and young. Mr W. Anderson made an efficient M.C. and the music was provided by tho young people of tho district who always give their services so cheerfully for any local benefits. Members of the committee, Mr Lankshear (chairman) and Messrs Gough (secretary), Woods and Scott, were responsible for the arrangements in putting on the concert and dance and gave tho teachers every assistance by attending to all minor details, thus ensuring such a successful and enjoyable ovening’s entertainment. .
