LABOURER SENT TO GAOL,
ALSO CHARGE OF THEFT
M Described as a labourer, Horace Dawson, 28 years of age, appeared begf fore Air J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning charged' with having fraudulently incurred a debt for £l3 5s at Palmerston % North on November 7 by falsely stating that his name was AVard and that | he was earning £1 15s per day, and ■ also with having, at Karere on January 28, stolen a cardigan valued at 18s 6d, the property 'of Nelson Gordon. I On the first charge, accused had the option of being dealt with by the t Supcine Court, and he elcted to go before a jury. A plea of not guilty was entered in regard to the second. Evidence was given by Nelson Gordon, a cook, that he and accused had I been potato digging at Karere. "SVitI ness had left his cardigan on a fence from where it had disappeared. Two months later it had been found in
accused’s possession. Constable Thom deposed that accns- | ed had made a statement that he had | taken the coat not knowing whoso it § was. jf Accused, on being questioned by the Bench, said said that he had not known who the owner was. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said that accused did no work and ' lived with his parents. His mother had once complained to tho police of his conduct. He had previous convictions. Sentence of 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour was passed. Accused then decided to be dealt with by the Magistrate on the first charge and pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady stated that, by making the representations complained of to Air Blair Tennent, accused had had his teeth extracted and a plate made. Air Tennent had been unable to trace accused, but had later come across him by accident. The imposed a sentence of two months’ imprisonment witli hard labour.
