GLEN OROUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN OROUA, Feb. 6. The annual picnic of the Glen Oroua School was held on Friday in Mr H. J. Lancaster’s paddock. Mr Lancaster had gone to a great deal of trouble in mowing grass and taking down a fence to allow the picnickers to enjoy the shade in a hollow between two rows of trees. Members of the committee and their wives worked hard to make the picnic a success and they were kept busy during the day supplying the children, parents and friends with liquid and other refreshment. Mrs Lancaster very kindly placed her kitchen at the disposal of the committee for the making of tea, and assisted generally with the arrangements. Games were . played in the forenoon and after lunch a sports programme was carried out under the charge of the teachers, Mr Parlane and Miss Wiseman, who were assisted by members of the committee. Afternoon tea was provided at about four-thirty and lollie scrambles were then indulged in by the smaller children, while Mr J. Howl presented a packet of sweets to each pupil of the school. Before the party dispersed, Mr L. Poupard, secretary of the school committee, briefly thanked Mr and Mrs Lancaster for their kindness and the ladies for so capably looking after the tea arrangements. Cheers were given by the pupils for Mr and Mrs Lancaster and the ladies. Mr Lancaster, in reply, stated that it gave Mrs Lancaster and himself great pleasure to do anything they could for the school and he was glad the picnic had been a success. He then called for cheers for the teachers and the committee and these were heartily given. Owing to the dry weather the dairy farmers are having rather a bad time, the milk supply having dropped considerably. Tanks in the majority of cases are empty and settlers are forced to fall back on the artesian supplies for household purposes, or obtain water from the Oroua River.
