ADDITIONAL PROTECTION

Mr Dickinson, of tlie House of Representatives, lias introduced a measure amending the Fordney-McCumben tariff in order to secure additional protection for American agricultural products. Five cents a pound would be placed on imported dry salted hides, four cents a pound on wet salted hides, sixteen cents a pound on dry salted calfskins, and ten cents a pound on wet salted calfskins. These items are now free. The rates on meat, fresh and prepared, would be increased from 20 to 40 per cent, ad valorem.—A. and N.Z. cable.
