V.C. GOVERNOR.
FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA
LONDON, Jan. 1. Colonel Alexander Gore Arkwright Hore-Rutliven, V.C., C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., has been appointed Governor of South Australia in succession to General Sir Tom Bridges. A famous soldier, Colonel HoreRutliven has served with distinction in many campaigns since he joined tho battalion of the Highland Light Infantry in 1898. A year later he obtained the V.C. at the battle of Gedaref, in the Sudan. He also served in Somaliland in 1903-4, and the following .year was appointed_Military Secretary to the Viceroy of Ireland. In the Great War ho was mentioned in despatches five times. He served in France and Gallipoli, being severly wounded during the operations at the Dardenelles whero he was on tho general staff. Fifty-six years of age. South Australia’s new Governor wus Military Secretary to the Governor-General of Australia (Earl of Dudley), ill 1908. He has been commanding tho First Infantry Brigade (Guards) at Aldershot since 1924. He is the second son and lieirprosumptive of the eighth Baron Ruthven of Cowrie, and lias one son Patrick Hardinge Alexander.
