PLUCKY SWIM.
STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR. ATTEMPT BY MISS GLEITZE. TANGIER, Dec. 16. Miss Mercedes Gleitze started an attempt to swim to Gibraltar this morning, but gave up after being 7$ hours in the water. * » Miss Gleitze, starting in smooth water, used the side stroke effectively, but, encountering a “Levanter,” was forced to resort to the breast stroke. In the constant struggle _ with the waves feeding became difficult. The trainer’s boat was often in danger of swamping, and the occupants, except the professional boatmen, became seasick. The gale grew worse, and it was considered useless to continue. The swimmer encountered porpoises, but no sharks. Miss Gleitze is confident of succeeding in calm water. —A. and N.Z. cable.
