LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES

There was a sharp contraction in the volume of business registered on the Stock Exchanges last week, but this is just what may be expected before a long vacation. Tho Stock Exchanges will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday for the Christmas and Now Year holidays. In Government securities moderate business resulted during the week. Tho 44 per cents. ' commanded most attention, and ohangod hands at £97, and the 54 per cents, sold at £99. Bank shares wore fairly active, and good business was dono in Bank of Now Zealand, nineteen parcels changing hands at 595,'59s 3d, and 59s 6d, most of tho sales being at 59s 3d. Business was done in Bank of Australasia at £l4 14s, and £l4 15s, National Bank of New Zealand _at £6 16s 6d cum. dividend. Commercial Bank of Australia (ordinary) at 29s' 3d and 29s sd, Bank of Now South Wales at £45 10s, Union Bank old issue at £l4 10s, now issue (fully paid) at £l4 ss. Financial shares were quiet, and sales were restricted to Dalgety and Company at £l3 Is 6d, and Loan and Mercantile ordinary stock at £9l. At tho weok-ond there were buyers of Equitable Building at £8 15s, and Wellington Trust and Loan at £6 17s. Gas shares were in poor demand, and no business was done in them. Insurance shares met with fair inquiry,_ but only small business was done. National Insurance sold at 15s lOd, and New Zealand Insurance at 40s_ 3d and 40s 9d. There was nothing doing in frozen moat shares or in coal shares. Shipping shares were quiet. Union Steam sold at 20s 6d, and P. and O. deferred stock at £265. There was a fair demand for woollen shares, but business was restricted to a sale of Wellington Woollen (ordinary) at £6 7s 6d. Brewery shares showed a firmer tendency, with sales of Now Zealand Breweries at 44s cum. dividend, and Staplos and Company at 38s 3d and 38s. In the miscellaneous section a rising tendency was displayed by British Tobacco shares, which sold at 38s, 38s 3d and 395. Sales were also registered of Colonial Sugar at £54 ss, Howard Smith at 29s 3d, Electrolytic Zinc (ordinary) at 30s 9d, preference at 31s 6d and 3ls 9d, and Wilson’s Cement at 38s 6d and 38s.
