MISSING JOURNALIST.
CHINESE OBSTRUCT INQUIRIES. LONDON, Aug. 22. The Hankow Herald, commenting on the disappearance of F. Basil Riley, the Australian former Rhodes scholar, and correspondent of the Times, London, who is lost in China, definitely accuses the Chinese authorities of refusing to assist in the investigation. All that the Chengchow authorities have done is to request an investigation, and to send a telegram saying, “Riley is not here,” says the paper. It states that foreigners at Chengchow are not too plentiful, and the appearance of a foreigner, in a small village in a far treaty port must have caused considerable comment. Mr Riley has now been missing for 30 days, and it is apparent that the Chinese authorities are not only refusing to but are apparently obstructing the inquiries of foreigners.
