LONGBURN. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONGBURN, Sept. 2. This weok a party from the Maori Methodist mission gave a concert in the hall to a packed house, late comers having to be satisfied with standing room only. There were only four performers in the party, but so versatile were they that the two hours’ programme seemed all too short. The publio showed their appreciation of a high class performance by encoring every item. Tho hall committee’s usual fortnightly euchre and danco was held on Tuesday night, but owing to tho many counter attractions in town there was only a fair attendance. Miss Kitty Larsen won the ladies’ prizo for tho euchre and Mr L. Palmor tho men’s prize. Mr Woodill was a capable and efficient M.C. Mr R. P. Jensen was unfortunate in having ono of his cows struck by lightning during Wednesday’s storm. Although the cow was not killed outright it is so paralysed that Mr Jensen docs not expect it to recover. Misses Joyce and Hazel Rowland are spending a holiday in Wellington. Miss F. Tanner, our local hockey enthusiast, is captain of Manawatu’s B team in the tourney now being held in Palmerston North. Mrs Holder and her two young daughters, of Wanganui, are visiting Mrs T. Rowland. F. Hearsey, of tho primary school representatives, who was consistently “mentioned in despatches” from Masterton, is a pupil of the local school. SHANNON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 2. ' On Wednesday evening when approaching tho Otarau Bridge, near Shannon, the driver of a motor car, Mr T. Dalziell, of Makerua, the car being also occupied by Mrs Dalziell, Airs Birehall and Mrs S. Mitchell, misjudged tho approach to tho bridge and the vehicle went a distance of Bft into the stream, stopping in 3ft of water. It was necessary to break tho hood of the car so as to climb out and all suffered from shock and a severe wetting, while Mrs Birchall sustained slight injury to tho face. It appears that Mr Dalziell was endeavouring to avoid over-running a -bicycle while at tho same time the bright headlights from an oncoming car made the negotiation of tho bridge, which is awkwardly situated, most difficult. The car was removed from the stream on Thursday morning when it was found to bo damaged to the extent of a broken wheel and a torn hood. s A meeting of the Athletic Club was held on Thursday evening when Mr A. T. White, tho newly-elected president, stated that, owing to pressure of business, he was unable to accept any responsible office. His resignation was accepted with regret, Mr J. B. Brann (vice-president) being elected to tho office of president, and Mr D. Mc-Lan-gan filling the position of vice-president. Mr T. Hohika, tho club’s secretary, was presented with a solid gold chain. Mr J. T. Bovis, in making the presentation on behalf of the club, made reference to Mr Kohika’s work in tho interests of the club. Mr Kohika suitably replied, thanking the members for their appreciation.
