Mr F. G. Stockwell, of Nelson, is at present paying a visit to Palmerston North. A London , cable states that Lieuten-ant-General Sir George Kirkpatrick has been promoted to the rank of General.' The friends of Mr "William Howick, 7 Linton Street, will be sorry to hear he has had a stroke and been confined to his bed for several days. Rev. and lira G. T. Brown have returned from a short trip in" Hawkd’s Bay and have taken up their residence in St. Andrew’s manse. Mr Archibald' Clements, of Parnell,* Auckland, who was made a Justice of the Peace half a century ago by Sir George Grey, attained the age of 91 years on Wednesday.

The friends of Mr W. W. Aldrich, a member of the local railway staff, will regret to learn that he is still confined to his bed through an accident to his back.

Hon. E. La Pointe, Canadian At-torney-General and Minister of Justice, will [ arrive at Auckland by the Aorangi on Monday. He is en route to Australia to represent Canada at the opening of the new Federal Parliament at Canberra.

Mr R. Milne, of the Invercargill branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred to Foxton as relieving manager. Mr Milne, who entered the service at Palmerston North, has been" stationed at Auckland and Invercargill since his return from the Grfeat War. Mr T. Rigg, M.Sc. ; agricultural chemist at thro Cawthron Institute, Nelson, will leave Wellington by the Makura next Tuesday for San Francisco on his way to Washington to attend the International Congress of Soil Scienoe. Mr Rigg will subsequently go to Britain to spend two months at the Rowett Institute, Aberdeen.

At the Petone Bowling Club on Thursday night a farewell was tendered to Jdr A.- Coles, one of the oldest members of the club, on the eve of Iris departure on an extended visit to the Old Country. On behalf of the members the president (Mr R. Hope) presented Mr Coles with a rug as a mark of appreciation and as a token of the esteem in which he-is held by the members of the club. The death occurred at Hamilton this week of Mr J. H. Speedy, aged 82. Mr Speedy was well known in Hamilton, where he had spent the last twenty years of his life in retirement. He was bom at/ the Hutt in 1845 and was one of the oldest pioneers in the Dominion. He was educated at Wellington, whence he moved with his parents to Hawke’s Bay. He was a member of the volunteer corps during the troublous days of Te Kooti, when it was necessary to work, literally, with a shovel m one hand and a rifle in the other. Later he was engaged in farming pursuits jn Sandon district. In 1902 he took up a large block of land at Tuhikaramea, Waikato. Mr Speedy was for many years a justice of the peace. He took a great interest in bowling, being one of the founders of the Frankton Club. He leaves a widow, four sons, and one daughter. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute in Wellington yesterday afternoon it was decided to award the Hecfor Memorial Medal and Prize for 1927 to Dr. C. A. Cotton, D.Sc., F.N.Z.lnst., F.G.S, Professor of Geology at Victoria JJniversity College, in recognition of his work in the advancement of the science of geology in New Zealand. Dr. Charles Andrew Cotton was educated at Otago University, where he graduated as Doctor of Science with first-class honours, in 1915. He is Dean of the Faculty of Science at Victoria University College. Dr. Cotton, who has done much valuable research work in geology, is the author of the “Geomorphology of New Zealand,” an introduction to the study of land forms, which is a manual of the Board of Science and Art of New Zealand.
