MYSTERIOUS DOG DISEASE.
CAUSING DEATH OF MANY ANIMALS.
The disease that has been affecting sheep and cattle dogs throughout the Dominion for the, last, 12 months or so has at present a firm grip in the Manawatu district, and many farmers and stockmen have lost valuable animals. Of an unknown cause, the disease has all the symptoms of distemper, but is not identical. It takes different dogs in different ways; with some it starts in a form akin to pneumonia, while others appear to have paralysis at the start. Some animals that are stricken recover, but are left weak in the hind quarters. ■Mr R. A. Chelae, of Utuwai, who has recently lost two valuable dogsi, told a “Standard” reporter that he had given both particular care and treatment when taken by the disease, but with no avail. One of the dogs had started with the symptoms of pneumonia, had then become paralysed, and eventually, after three weeks of treatment, had died in convulsions. The other dog of his to die had first of all been taken with paralysis of the back. No effective treatment, aa far as he knew had, yet been devised for the malady.
