REASONS WHY CITIZENS SHOULD ALL VOTE FOR HIM.
(To the Editor.). " Sir, —May I crave a few lines of your space, and at the same time, may I invoke the good offices of the “Manawatu Standard” to secure the return of Mr William Milverton to the Council. My reasons are : First: There are times in the history of every town —(of every country too) — when to honour a man, it is honouring itself. Mr William Milverton, "whom we have known for over thirty years, has lived a most honourable, stainless, and upright life. Besides, he has proved h;s goodwill to the citizens of Palmerston North, by the gift of a park, which I am told is worth over £SOOO. For the citizens of Palmerston North to honour Mr Milverton is to show their appreciation of his life and worth, and their gratitude for his splendid gift to them. To honour him, therefore, is to honour themselves and the town to which we belong. Second: The citizens of Palmerston North might, resolve to • support Mr Milverton by some lessons from history : How pitiable, for example,- was it that good men have often been allowed to ‘‘pass on westwards” without any recognition of their worth by their countrymen. .Scotland, for example, allowed Burns to die in pov-, erty, although he was scarcely in his grave when it discovered the saddest mistake it had made. Other cases could be multiplied, in England, in America and even in New Zealand. Palmerston North should not make any mistake like this. I most earnestly hope not. Let us—one and all—see that whatever else we may do on polling day we shall haVe the manliness and the honour to' acknowledge a man who was our benefactor, and thereby to prove our 'gratitude to him and our appreciation of his work. I clpse, Mr Editor, by again invoking your widespread inriuence to ask Palmerston North to show its deep sense of self respect and goodwill for Mr William Milverton. —I am, etc., Wm. THOMSON, Palmerston North, 22nd April, 1927.
