SETTLER'S HARDSHIPS.
RELIEF ASKED FOR. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, April 22. “Tho condition of those dwelling places which the party was able to inspect showed conclusively that tho families had carried on to the last pitch of endurance before making an appeal,” was a statement made to-day by the representatives of the National Council of Women who visited Ngaroma (135 miles south-east from Auckland) to learn the actual conditions. The opinion was held that tho position of the women and children was untenable after years of toil, heartbreaking worry and hardship. The land was cattle-sick and deplorable conditions were said to exist. But the women were not seeking charity or afraid of hard work. They were convinced that it was useless to hope for any amelioration at Ngaroma. What they asked was a transfer to another sphere where their labours were likely to produce an adequate return. Another visit will bo paid the district shortly.
