A HANDSOME TROPHY.

THE AWAPUNI GOLD CUP. ATTRACTIVE CLASSIC EVENT. Figuring on the programme of events which each year comes up for decision at the Autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club are threeclassic races, but undoubtedly the greatest interest is centred in the Awapuni Gold Cup. While the field is almost invariably a small one, it is particularly select and the six candidates which will parade before the public on Thursday can be numbered among the best performers of which the Dominion can boast. Attached to the event is a stake of 520 sovs., including a gold cup of the value of TOO guineas and it is this trophy, more than the stake itself, which owners are so desirous of acquiring. On view at Messrs O’Connor and Tydeman’s at the present time is the IBct. cup, the workmanship of the firm, which will go to the fortunate winning owner on Thursday. The design is that which has previously been observed and which was originally the artistic work of Mr J. M. Johnston, the Manawatu Club’s energetic secretary. Mounted on an" oak base the cup_ itself stands 7J inches high and is 51 inches across the lip with an arm spread of a further 2J inches. Ornamentation has been strictly avoided and the plainness of the surface of the gold face of the cup enhances rather than detracts from its beauty and richness. The trophy will make a worthy addition to the list which the fortunate winning owner may already possess.
