HOTEL BURGLARY

VISITING BOWLER ROBBED.

LARGE SUM OF MONEY STOLEN

A daring burglary was perpetrated at an early hour this morning at one of the local hotels when an unknown intruder gained entry to the room <if Mr A. McNicol, of Dannevirke. He stole a considerable sum of money in notes and made his departure uninterrupted, leaving no trace behind him as to how admission had been obtained into the room. Mr McNicol is a visitor to the Manawatu Bowling Centre’s New Year tournament and lias placed the matter in the hands of the police, who are investigating the case. Interviewed by a representative of the “Standard” this morning, Mr McNicol stated that he was awakened at two o’clock in the morning by somebody moving about in the room. “I did not take any notice of the fact at first, thinking it was the nightporter,” he said, “but after the man moved stealthily across to the bedroom door and disappeared, I thought something was wrong.” It was then that the visiting bowler discovered his loss. The licensee was aroused and a search of the building was made, but of no avail, all the doors and windows being found locked and undisturbed. Mr McNicol holds the theory that the entry to his room was obtained through the medium of the fire-escape, which adjoins the window of the bedroom, and the burglar had gone about his work little realising that the occupant had been aroused.
