PONSONBY BOYS’ BAND.

PROPOSED CANADIAN TRIP. GOVERNMENT ASKED TO HELP. “I’ll bring your request before Cabinet immediately,, so that you won’t have to want long for a reply,” said tho Premier when a deputation made representations for financial assistance from the Government to help send the Ponsonby Boys’ Band to Canada. Mr M. J. Savage, M.P., in introducing Mr J. D. liurfit, the honorary secretary of the band, said it was felt in Auckland that such a visit by the band would be of great educational value to the boys- and an advertisement for the Dominion. Mr Hurfit said that tho band would give about 50 concerts in Canada, and at each they would distribute literature advertising New Zealand: “The land of milk and honey, and all that sort of thing, you know.” “The trip,” he continued, “would cost about £3500, and it was desired that the fares there and back be paid before starting out. Thirty-four boys would be going, their ages ranging from 15 to 19 years. They would play at the Toronto Exhibition. What was wanted was the liall-mark of the New Zealand Government.”

. Mr .T. S. Dickson, M.P. for Parnell, also supported the suggestion.
