FIXATION OF PRICE.
ERRONEOUS STATEMENT CORRECTED. The Prime Minister has issued the; following statement: “The attention of the Government has been drawn to the following telegram which recently appeared in the London Daily Mail from ytlie editor of the New Zealand Times:—The New Zealand Dairy Control Board’s compulsory scheme, commencing on August 1, means that the Board’s London manager (Mr Wright) will fix the selling price from day to day for the whole Dominion output, and that the board employs Mr Wright to extract the last possible penny that the consunir ers will pay.> Will the British public stand for such price fixing? (Signed) Marris, Editor. “I have placed myself in communication with the board, and am glad to be informed that the statements made in this telegram are erroneous in fact, and are contrary to the board’s reiterated public pronouncements that its policy is and will be by well-ordered shipments to the British markets, combined with constant consultation between London board members and selling agents there to stabilise prices upon a basis advantageous alike to producers in New Zealand and to consumers in Britain. The London manager of tho board, as its servant, will carry out the policy of the board, which hopes by paying close attention s to the consumers’ requirements not only to benefit the New Zealand producer, but also to be of material service to the British consumer, thus maintaining the good will and satisfactory relationship between the two parties which lias hitherto existed.”
