POISONOUS MUSHROOM.
PICKED NEAR HENDERSON. BRIGHT RED AVITH YELLOAV SPOTS.
[By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.] AUCKLAND, June 24. People who are fond of mushrooms should escheAV the bright red ones with yelloAV spots. The other day one of these was picked at Henderson and sent in to the curator of the Auckland Museum (Mr Gilbert. Archery) Avho sent it doAvn to AVellington to the mycologist of the Department of Agriculture (Mr G. H. Cunningham) for identification. Mr Cunningham says that the fungus is an agafica called “aminita muscarina,” and is one of the most deadly of a poisonous species. It is not .a native of NeAV Zealand and Avas probably introduced from Europe in grass or other seeds. A bright red Avith yelloAV spots,.tho aminita groAvs up to four inches across tho head and is quite a slioAvy object among the grass. Probably no adult would be so foolish as to sample such a suspicious looking mushroom, but children should bo AVarned against it.
Apparently it is not uncommon out at Henderson and no doubt it has invaded other districts as Avell.
