RUGBY TROUBLE.

STATEMENT BY OFFICIAL.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 24. Mr H. Cliffe, president of the Auckland Rugby Referees’ Association ma do a statement in reference to the Rugby inquiry involving F. Lucas, who was ordered off during a match last Saturday. “Mr Lucas interviewed me subsequent to the meeting of the ltugby Union last night,” said Mr Cliffe. ‘“He has denied, and still denies, the use of the words ascribed to him by Mr Pemberton. the referee. At the samo time he has instructed me to convey to Mr Pemberton, through my association, his frank and free apology for having in any way remarked to the referee during the match, in view of the publicity which has been given to this matter, and whilst Lucas still denies that he used the words for which he was requested to leave the field, I feel certain his action in apologising for whatever ho did say is a most sportsmanlike action, and I have accepted his apology on behalf of the association and Mr Pemberton.”
