TIMBER INDUSTRY.
BAD POSITION IN SOUTHLAND
Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, June 24. “The timber industry in Southland is going from bad to worse,” stated a well-known business man here to-day He forecast that the mills this year would produce only 15,000,000 feet of timber out of a total cutting capacity of 50,000,000 feet. This would mean that less than a third of the mills could be fully occupied. Still further evidence of a slackening off, he added, was given by the fact that a mill had just stopped working, while another mill, usually employing a good number of men, now had only five hands working in the bush and the mill. The position was now very, serious, and there was not the slightest sign of any improvement. He had never before known the indiistry to bo in such a state of depression. .
