WHITE AUSTRALIA.
OUTSPOKEN DELEGATE
ITALIANS NOT WANTED. Received Juno 24, 1.20 p.m. LONDON, Juno 23. Mr Evatt gave an outspoken intimation of the sacredness of the “White Australia” policy and of Australian Labour’s disregard of any decision inimical thereto ,wlien contraverting Mr Jowett's proposal at the Labour Migration Congress. Ho said it was obvious that the congress’ viewpoint was European, while tho Australian Labourite's policy embodied two cardinal non-European principles, namely, a “White Australia,” which was iucontrovertibly opposed to tho influx, not only of assisted migrants, but of any immigration until the land monopoly was broken up and tho unemployed absorbed, and secondly, that trades union consent must be obtained for any scheme of immigration. Un 7 fortunately an anti-Labour Government controlled Australian immigration, with the result that there was a greater percentage of unemployment in Australia than in tho majority of the European countries. Labour was bitterly opposed to immigration from southern Europe, especially from Italy, and desired to see established safeguards against uncontrolled migration. “If we open tho door as the United States and Canada did, and we subsequently desire to close it there will be a pretext for war. Australia is not affiliated with your international bodies and therefore your resolutions do not bind us.”—A. and N.Z. cable.
