RAILWAY COLLISION.
EVIDENCE OF AN EYE-WITNESS
MELBOURNE, Juno 23. At the inquest into the Caulfield railway collision a witness gave evidence that he saw the whole accident from the platform. He said that the Oakleigh train’s speed was about 16 miles an hour, and when the brakes were applied they reduced it by half. The noise of the brakes was greater than the actual crash, yet they seemed to be taking little effect on the train wheels, which appeared to be locked. Tlie train seemed to skid into the Carrum train. Visibility was clear, but the ground was wet. Further evidence showed that when the signals were tested after the accident they operated satisfactorily.— Press Association.
